Solar Farms on Agricultural Land

How solar farms and agriculture coexist — land grade, food production, soil health, grazing and the policy picture.

Home/For Landowners/Solar Farms on Agricultural Land

There's an understandable concern that solar farms take good land out of food production. In practice, well-planned solar focuses on lower-grade land, keeps soils resting and improving, and can even continue to produce food through grazing and agrivoltaics.

Solar uses a tiny fraction of UK farmland, and a 30–40 year lease can give tired soil a generation to recover under grass while earning a steady income. For many farms it's a way to keep the whole business viable, not a retreat from farming.

Why it works

  • Schemes focus on lower-grade, less productive land
  • Soils rest and recover under grass during the lease
  • Grazing and agrivoltaics keep land in food production
  • Biodiversity and pollinator habitat designed into sites
  • A reliable income that supports the wider farm business
How it works

Our process, step by step

  1. Right land

Lower-grade fields are prioritised, protecting the best farmland.

  2. Soil rest

Under grass, soil structure and organic matter recover over time.

  3. Keep farming

Sheep grazing and agrivoltaics maintain agricultural use.

  4. Restore

At the end of term the land returns, often in better heart.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Doesn't solar take food-producing land?

Solar uses a very small share of UK farmland and favours lower-grade land. With grazing and agrivoltaics, much of it stays in food production too.

Will my soil be damaged?

No — typically the opposite. Years under grass with no cultivation or chemicals tend to improve soil structure and organic matter.

Can I keep grazing livestock?

Frequently yes. Sheep grazing under and around panels is common and helps manage the site.

Will I lose my agricultural status?

It depends on the scheme and current rules. Agrivoltaic and grazed sites often retain agricultural use — we'll help you understand your position.
